In Conversation with Meryl Donoghue: ‘Photography’

In anticipation of Meryl Donoghue’s upcoming exhibition, ‘I thought to have been gone by now…’ opening 5th September, we have decided to ask her a few questions about each element of her new body of work.  Today, we are asking her about her stunning photographic prints…

StolenSpace: Can you explain a bit about the process of your photographic work? Your beautiful, glossy images are very lifelike, while at the same time highly manipulated and surreal…how do you achieve this effect?

Meryl Donoghue: All of my photographic pieces are created using A4 flat bed scanners. I have been experimenting with photocopying and scanning for years, initially attracted to the way that light behaves in such machines as well as the instantaneous nature of their image making. I scan each of the components seen in my work in many sections, later piecing them together digitally to create the composition I desire. Each work is comprised of hundreds of A4 scans painstakingly manipulated to create a hopefully seamless image and thus achieving a certain level of realism.  This stake in reality is important when making such surreal images, as it grounds the absurd in something tangible.

Stay tuned for more from Meryl Donoghue, we have plenty of info and updates to come as we get ready for her exhibition!
